Korean pop sensation T.O.P and Hong Kong star Cecilia Cheung Pak-chi star with “The Vampire Diaries’” Michael Trevino in big-budget German-Chinese co-production “Out of Control.” The film recently began two months of production in Germany.

The story involves a Chinese film and martial arts star (Cheung) who is ensnared by a dangerous plot while visiting the Berlin Film Festival. Her survival and the success of a major rescue mission depend on a Korean secret agent (T.O.P), who is also her ex-fiance.

T.O.P (real name Choi Seug-hyun) is part of the YG Entertainment-produced Big Bang group which have been fixtures across Asia since 2007. T.O.P has a budding career as an actor with credits including “Tazza: The Hidden Card” and “71: Into the Fire,” and “Out of Control” marks his first movie from China, where Korean bands are massively popular. He remains part of the group, but will miss their upcoming tour of Japan.

Cheung has starred in Stephen Chow’s “Shaolin Soccer,” and Johnnie To’s “Running on Karma” and for several years was considered Hong Kong’s top female star, but has not made a movie since 2012’s Chinese remake of “Dangerous Liaisons.”

The film is co-directed by Axel Sand (“Alarm for Cobra 11”) and Richard Lin; and based on a script written by Andreas Heckmann (“Alarm for Cobra 11”).

Production is by Hermann Joha, Jing Su, and Stefan Retzbach of Cologne-based production outfit Action Concept; and financed by China’s Dreams of Dragons Pictures, led by Wilson Qiu.

Some 46 days of shooting in Germany – including locations in Cologne, Duesseldorf, Wuppertal, Bad Oeynhausen, Berlin and Aldenhoven — will wrap at the end of May.

Action Concept previously co-produced “Collide,” with Nicholas Hoult, Felicity Jones, Anthony Hopkins and Ben Kingsley, and Ron Howard’s “Rush.” Dreams of Dragons was an investor in and executive producer of Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis’ “Cloud Atlas.”

State-backed Huaxia Distribution will release the film in China.
